Heart of America Marathon Report – September 5, 2001

Here’s a brief report from the Heart of America Marathon in Columbia, Missouri on September 3, 2001. I finished 10th overall with a time of 3:18:10. Race Director Joe Duncan contacted me the day after the race to tell me that I had won the Dave Schulte Memorial Award for Improved Performance. This award goes to the runner with the greatest percent improvement when the previous best HOA Marathon was less than 5 hours. (My time the previous year was 3:46:43 – a 12.5% improvement.)

Hal Higdon, noted running author and senior writer for Runners’ World, joined us at HOA for his 7/7/70 (7 marathons in 7 months on his 70th birthday). Hal won the HOA back in 1968.

As a sidebar, I attended a luncheon on September 4th with Congressman Jim Ryun, holder of the high school mile record for more than 35 years.
